Senator Johnston’s bill to eliminate inactive voting status for Colorado voters who miss a general election, SB 12-109, was approved today with bipartisan support from the Colorado Senate. The bill will now go the House.

In his closing remarks before the vote, Senator Johnston said that Americans only have two major opportunities to make laws in our democracy: by serving on a jury and by voting.

We want to do what we can to encourage people civically engage in running their own democracy. Anything we do to make it more likely that they engage is a good thing; anything we do that puts a burden in front of them we ought to think twice about.
