In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day and the millions of people across the world who lost their lives, the Colorado Senate passed a joint resolution yesterday marking April 16-20, 2012, as Holocaust Awareness Week in Colorado.

Holocaust survivors joined the senators on the Senate floor during the debate of the resolution. Senator Johnston shared a letter he wrote last year for his twin sons, Emmett and Seamus, after he visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. The poem, titled “A Postcard from Amsterdam,” was his attempt to explain to his sons the heartbreaking story of Anne Frank.

After reading his emotional poem, Senator Johnston said to the Holocaust survivors:

Thank you so much for all you have given, and for making sure that my children will be raised in a world where we never forget.
